Memorize It

Its funny to think about how many scripture verses I committed to memory as a child and how rarely I try to commit things to memory now that I am an adult and supposedly “mature” in the faith.  Memorizing takes time and discipline, something many of us are already short of after completing all of our responsibilities in a typical day.

My goal, however, is to reverse this trend of scripturally illiterate adults.  Will you join me in committing to memory just one Bible verse a week.  Each week I will pick a verse from the Bible Reading Plan or Devotions for the upcoming week and I will commit to memorizing it completely by the end of the week.  I will type it every day in the comments if I have to.  Hopefully with the participation of some of you, we can push eachother to put God’s Word not only into our heads, but into our hearts as well.

    Isaiah 40:31 (ESV)
          “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength;
          they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
          they shall run and not be weary;
          they shall walk and not faint.”

I will be using English Standard Version for all the scripture memorization because it has the same rhythm as King James without the olde English words (notice the “e” on the end of “old” ) and is therefore a lot easier to (re)memorize verses I learned as a child. If you aren’t familiar with this version, I strongly recommend you check it out. It is as accurate as NASB, has the flow of the KJ, and is as clear as the NIV – truly a great modern translation.
