How true a statement, we are awakened to the Word of God most when our lives are rocked and we come running. Having been raised in the church I can quote verse upon verse, but those that truly stick with me, that I have the deepest understanding of, are the verses I rediscovered when the rug was pulled out from under me. In those times, in my solitude (hey, I'm a pretty keep-the-baggage-to-yourself person), the Holy Spirit opened my eyes, my ears, my heart to a true understanding of God. Even now there are times when I'll be purusing my Bible (sometimes mindlessly *sigh*) and I'll come across a verse or a passage that has been written on my heart through the reality of being human and living in a sinful world...and I'll stop and dwell on the richness of Him, acknowledging He is all He claims to be. His character is that of a strong father, a tender friend, a jealous lover, and above all, my Redeemer.

Its so easy to fall into the Pharisee trap. As a child I was taught to memorize my Bible verses in Sunday School and sing loudly in Kids church and do everything the "right" way in the main service. Transitionioning into adulthood, it was only natural to view my relationship with God as being tied tightly to doing things the "Christian" way. I have to constantly remind myself that "doing" the right things won't punch my ticket to Heaven, but it is through "being" in relationship with God, regardless of how messed up my life gets. I know that I too quickly judge people for not doing things the way "we always do it in church", and for that I need God's forgiveness. Thank you Jesus for grace and mercy and for not making the path to Heaven a series of tests of goodness!

Its funny because I know that pride is one of the issues I constantly have to deal with, and even when I repeatedly work on it and take on a servant's heart, I get proud of the job I am doing of not being proud! Its a vicious cycle that will not be broken until my pride is removed not by my own doing but by God's grace. I need to remember that God is the shaper of my life, if I try to do it all myself I will always fail.

I will be using English Standard Version for all the scripture memorization because it has the same rhythm as King James without the olde English words (notice the "e" on the end of "old" ) and is therefore a lot easier to (re)memorize verses I learned as a child. If you aren't familiar with this version, I strongly recommend you check it out. It is as accurate as NASB, has the flow of the KJ, and is as clear as the NIV - truly a great modern translation.
